2015 Weddings – Perfectly Planned by Pati

This year started off really slow.  In fact, it made me think God had closed a planning door and was ready for me to do something else.  But as always, He surprises me!  I filled up for the summer and fall before I knew it.  Bride’s came from referrals, chance meetings, vendors and venues.  I am always thankful for those that are referred to me.  I am reminded that I did a good job and made someone’s day perfect.  Thank you to all of those that made 2015 possible.  I am grateful and thankful for God’s hand on my business and I will be looking forward to what He has planned for 2016.  Over the next few weeks I will be posting most of my weddings to the blog.  It seems there is never enough time to Facebook, Instagram and Blog.  By the time I blog, most people have seen it somewhere else.  If I commit to one a week, it will happen!

I am sorry Mr. Blog that you are so neglected.  You are just one more thing to take care of!

Have a perfect day!

A RE-POST FROM “THE REFLECTIVE BRIDE”

Why We Didn’t Hire a Wedding Planner… But Wish We Had

WEDDING TO DO LIST
I WAS LOOKING FOR REASONS TO HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER AND CAME UPON THIS POST THAT WAS ON THE “HUFFINGTON POST” ABOUT A YEAR AGO.  THESE ARE WISE WORDS FROM A BRIDE THAT DID NOT HIRE A PLANNER.  SHE HAS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T.  A GREAT READ!

The Reflective Bride……

In the early stages of preparing for our big day, we decided not to employ the services of a wedding planner… but in hindsight, oh, how I wish we had!

Why we didn’t
We had very little debate about whether or not to bring a wedding planner on board. Quite simply, I wanted us to handle all the preparations and vendor research ourselves. I thought it would be fun to do the research, and also felt that us looking into the suppliers was the only way to know all the options… so that we could make a truly informed decision and ensure we got the style we liked at the most reasonable price — not simply a wedding planner’s “usual” contacts. My groom was more than happy with this conclusion, since it saved us an extra line item in our bridal budget… and we were indeed worried that a wedding planner would be quite expensive.

Why we wish we had
Wedding tasks aren’t always fun. Sure, it’s a ball to ooh and aah over cake designs, but there’s nothing enjoyable about researching mini-buses for guest transport or making seating charts. There isn’t much joy in reviewing vendor contracts or keeping track of payments, either. Contrary to what I had thought, hiring a wedding planner doesn’t mean outsourcing your entire wedding; a wedding planner only handles what you want them to (support at the start to get you on the right track, on-the-day coordination only, or indeed the whole shebang) so won’t take over and choose your final bouquet design for you. So if do you want to drive your wedding planning, you can focus on the fun parts… and leave the boring bits to someone else.

Wedding planning is stressful. Wedding planning is not the romantic experience one expects it to be. There are many details to take care of, meddling family and friends might drive you crazy and vendors can be a source of drama. During our engagement, several recently married friends told me that in the final month before the wedding they had been so exhausted that they just wanted the day to be over. This ended up being true for me: in the final week I lost five pounds from stress, burst into tears a few times and my groom and I were snapping at each other. This is not how anyone’s planning should be. Bringing on board a professional planner to help and take some of the workload off our hands definitely would have made sense (and they probably could have given advice on managing family drama).

We weren’t that great at choosing vendors after all. Despite thinking that researching vendors ourselves was the only way to ensure we could make the best supplier decisions, this didn’t work out so swimmingly. Out of 15 or so wedding day vendors, there were only three that we were actually totally happy with… and some others we were extremely unhappy with. When we started out planning, we had organized less than one wedding… why did we think our judgment would be better than that of a professional, who has seen these vendors in action at more than one (and perhaps several, and perhaps many!) weddings? Why did I think a planner would force us into choosing a vendor we weren’t completely happy with?

We didn’t know what to look for in a vendor. Other than a little Google research before interrogating potential vendors via email, we really had no idea what to ask. For example, after contacting 20 different hairdressers for quotes, I realized I had to specify if I was planning an up- or down-do to get accurate pricing… so had to email them all over again. We asked cake makers for price quotes for a three-tier cake, but it didn’t occur to us to ask about the height of the tiers… until two months before the wedding, when we found out the “magnificent” wedding cake we were paying hundreds of dollars for was only nine inches tall, and we’d now have to shell out twice as much money to get it to the grandeur that we wanted.

Wedding planning takes time. Until you really get into the preparations for your big day, it is impossible to fathom how much work is involved and how many details need to be taken care of. I know brides who have taken leave from work in order to have more time to prepare their weddings. If you work long hours, have lots of hobbies or have children to look after, and don’t want to be completely drowning in to-do lists during your engagement, a wedding planner handling some of those tasks for you could be a real lifesaver. Also, you really don’t want to get in trouble at the office by getting caught doing wedding planning on company time!

Things do go wrong at the last minute. The day before the wedding, the baker for our cake buffet claimed they never received our order, and our dance floor provider phoned halfway through our bridal party lunch claiming they hadn’t been paid. That night while setting up the reception room, we realized one table setting was missing, so had to frantically call the decorator for extra chair decorations, and re-confirm guest numbers with the kitchen. Tiny things, but they were unnecessary and brought a general feeling of stress on a day my groom and I had planned to be lovely and relaxing. Someone to handle those details for us would have been amazing. We were lucky nothing went wrong on the wedding day itself, but — yikes! — what if something had?

A wedding planner can help with costs. The imagined price for a wedding planner was a reason we decided against hiring one. However, here are two things that I realized in hindsight: 1) Planners know what different services cost, and can better spot when a vendor price is exorbitantly high or too good to be true. They know most local wedding vendors, and can help you get the best value for your budget. 2) As with any other wedding vendor, you will agree in advance what services you want from your planner and how much that will cost. It is not in their interest to hand you a bill at the end of the wedding that you can’t afford to pay. Wish we’d realized all that earlier!

It can be difficult to find help elsewhere. There is much to do in preparing your special day, so without a planner you either must ask help from others or handle everything yourselves. Occasionally we asked our family or bridal party to help, but none actually themselves offered assistance, so we soon felt awkward asking. On the wedding day, when my groom should have chilling out, he was driving all over town picking up cakes and buttonholes, and when he arrived at the ceremony had to set up our refreshments table. We asked one friend to reach the ceremony early so she could SMS us that the officiant, musicians and decorator had arrived on time. These are all tasks that an on-the-day wedding planner could have coordinated for us, rather than burdening ourselves or our guests.

At the beginning of your wedding planning, sit down as a couple and consider how much time, how much budget and how many helpers you have available for big-day preparations. Consider which areas you could do with professional support, and which planning areas you’re less interested in and happy to outsource to someone. Look into wedding planners in your local area; even if you’re hesitant, it won’t cost you anything to give them a call and find out the range and price of their services. It could be your best way to a smoother, less stressful and more romantic wedding planning experience.

In October of 2013, one year before Stephanie and Payton’s wedding, I was setting up for a wedding at the Palace Theater and the Lancaster Room in Grapevine.  Stephanie and her mom came to take a look since that is where they were going to have a wedding a year later.  I met them and we were a match.   I loved Stephanie and her mom and we really made a great team.  Then we added the groom.  It made for a perfect day.

Working in a theater as a ceremony location has it’s challenges.  The first one is “How do we make it look like it is not a play?” Thanks to Randy at Randy Ro Entertainment, he was able to drape and light the stage just as the bride imagined it.  WePlusYou added candles and instantly it was transformed.  The bride chose a beautiful strapless gown and surrounded herself with precious bridesmaids dressed in jewel tones.  WePlusYou provided beautiful floral to pull it all together.

I love when we mix it up a little by making the cake table a focal point in the room.  Stephanie loved gold and that is where the cake table started.  The yummy cake adorned with gold and the desserts of many kinds were provided by The Jenny Layne Bakery.  The guests loved it.  Dinner was provided by Extreme Cuisine Catering of Argyle and music was provided by Mike Sanderson of Randy Ro Entertainment.  S.E.A.T by design provided the beautiful champagne satin linens.

Sarah and Josh – 9.19.14 – Here comes the Sun….flower!

JOSH AND SARAH’S ENGAGEMENT

093

Sarah and Josh!  Her smile would melt your heart!  And that is exactly what happened to Josh!  He is a personal trainer and she is a delivery nurse bringing beautiful babies into the world.  They met at the gym and the rest is history!  I can imagine that everyone who meets Sarah falls in love.  That would be why she had 10 bridesmaids.  They were all too sweet, including her sister that was the Maid of Honor.  They chose Hickory Street Annex as their venue of choice.  This is probably one of my favorite venues in Dallas.  It is a little rustic, a little classy, a little cozy, happy place tucked in near Fair Park.  She chose a wide color pallet of Sunflower Yellow, mint green and gray with a great splash of a chevron pattern for runners.  Who doesn’t love chevron?    Who doesn’t love chandeliers over the head table?  Who doesn’t love a GIANT head table?  Who doesn’t love a cross and what that represents in a marriage at the end of the aisle?  Who doesn’t love a new husband that worships the ground his new wife walks on?  Who doesn’t love cake by The Jenny Layne Bakery and yummy food by Gil’s Elegant Catering?   Who doesn’t love, love?  And what about that fluffy wedding dress, cowboy boots and gorgeous flowers and a red pickup truck for pictures?  Jennefer Wilson Photography caught all of these delicious details on camera and Amanda Ferguson of We Plus You made the color pallet come to life. Dance, dance, dance with Randy Ro Entertainment!   OMG, I just loved this wedding!  Enjoy the pictures and the love represented here on this PERFECT day!

Regan and Jonathan – 9.02.14 – A Lovely Purple Garden Wedding

Who doesn’t love purple!  All shades of purple in a garden!  Marie Gabrielle/Dallas hosted this beautiful wedding!  Regan and Jonathan were so much in love and were so excited to spend their perfect day with family and friends that they don’t see very often.

Regan and Jonathan live in Berlin, Germany and live life on a volleyball tour overseas.  They play everywhere!  Regan plays for Team USA (indoor) and Jonathan plays sand volleyball for Team Ghana and hopes to be on the Olympic team.  They met in the Netherlands and were introduced by a mutual friend and had a sweet 8 year “court”ship.  OK, so how did they find me?  Regan and Jonathan are both from North Texas, even though they met in a foreign land.  Regan’s parents live in Houston and Jonathan’s parents live in Ft. Worth.    Regan did a little internet research and chose the beautiful garden of Marie Gabrielle for their ceremony and indoors for reception.  Most of the planning was done via email with 2 short trips to the US for some marathon planning.

Weather for outdoor weddings are always a little iffy, but it was September and the chances of rain were doubtful.  Right before the ceremony the wind picked up and we said many prayers.  10 minutes into the outdoor cocktail hour, the rain came down hard and there was a rush for the door.   The rain was quickly forgotten by friends and family and it was a fun and beautiful evening!   Thankful for the rain!  It produced the great picture with the umbrella taken by Allison Davis Photography.  The food was yummy, the cake was delicious thanks to Opulent Cakes,  the decor was spectacular thanks to We Plus You and S.E.A.T.S. by Design,  and the dancing and DJ Michael Jerome were amazing!  It was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT DAY!  Despite the rain!

Laura and Ryan – Something Blue…..8.2.14

I have known Laura since she was in middle school.  Laura and my daughter, Melissa,  were friends in church youth choir.  Although they went to different schools, they both loved band and Laura ended up being a Middle School Band Director.  Over the years they remained friends and Melissa was her Matron on Honor.  This was a wedding that was planned from afar.  Laura lived in Pasadena and Ryan lived here.  The bride’s parents were in Austin, but with just a few trips to Dallas, we were able to plan a pretty wedding that was really sweet.  Laura loved “horizon blue”.  I love it when the bride steps outside the crayon box and uses a bright color.

Elephants…..  I am not sure an elephant is a subtle detail to a wedding, but Laura and Ryan made it work.  Ryan, the groom, loves elephants.  Laura adopted a baby elephant for him from the Fort Worth Zoo, has painted him pictures of elephants and wanted to somehow incorporate elephants into the day.  So the cake and the program had that little “elephant” accent.   A fact about elephants I did not know was that trunks raised on an elephant is a symbol of “good luck”.

BranniganFerguson48

They chose  Le Beaux  Chateau for their wedding and reception venue in Flower Mound.  The Jenny Layne Bakery added some sweet elephants to the yummy cake with lot’s of blue dots.    The chapel and ballroom are connected, so when their guests arrived, no one had to go in the heat except for a few pictures.  Julie Shields of  Phase 3 Photography caught some great moments and Mike Sanderson of Randy Ro Entertainment provided lot’s of fun music with hours of dancing.  Extreme Cuisine of Argyle provided some great Italian food.

Laura and Jonathan – Love, love love! 7.12.14

One of the wonderful things about wedding planning is that one wedding, produces another and then another and then another.  See if you can follow this.  Sarah (Laura’s sister) was one of the first weddings I planned.  I have known Laura and Sarah since they were in elementary school  Sarah’s wedding was large and beautiful!  Laura (the bride’s sister) referred me to Holly who led me to Megan, Macey, Callyn and back to LAURA who married Holly’s brother, JONATHAN….which is what this blog is about!  Almost all of LAURA’s bridesmaids had been brides in weddings I had planned.   It is a circular world of referrals….of which I am very thankful!

Laura and Jonathan were sweethearts after high school (even though they went to high school together).  At that time it didn’t quite work out.  Then Jonathan’s sister (Holly) got married and they were brought back into each other’s presence and one thing led to another, which led to Jonathan moving back to Dallas from LA and Laura moving back to Dallas from Nashville, an engagement and then a HAPPILY EVER AFTER!

Laura was a bride who knew exactly what she wanted, what kind of wedding, what kind of reception, color, style and food. That makes my job easy.  She and Jonathan chose the beautiful Room on Main in downtown Dallas and Royal Lane Baptist Church.  Best blessing for me is that my husband, Sonny, with Love Notes, performed their ceremony.  He truly loves Laura and Jonathan and that makes it special.

Laura chose a beautiful and simple dress with pockets and a perfect bow in the front from Bridal Boutique in Lewisville.  The girls wore kelly green short dresses.  Sarah, the Matron of Honor, had a bow on the back of her dress.  So cute!

Floral was provided by Lisa Stiles of Coco Fleur Events. The bride chose a total ranunculus bouquet of white that was so perfect for her.  Cute lamps with the bride and groom’s monogram were subtle in the ballroom.  The monograms were also on sashes on the pews in the church, programs, the bride’s necklace and handkerchief. SO SWEET!

CN Catering provided fish tacos, beef sandwiches, waffle fries and other fun items for a station dinner, followed by fresh made donut holes with fun sauces and a traditional cake made by The Jenny Layne Bakery.

Randy Ro Entertainment provided music for the event and the talented Matt McElligott provided photography.

A very PERFECT day!

Emily and Daniel’s Garden Wedding – 6.29.14

Emily and Daniel….so much in love.  I have known Emily since she was in Middle School.  She attended a Sunday School class my husband and I taught when she was in High School.  We saw Emily and her parents at church on Christmas Eve 2013 and she had just become engaged to Daniel.  I handed her mom my card and the planning began!  The first time I met with Emily she had so much fun telling me how they met, how they loved the Lord and how much she loved butterflies and nature. We took those items to the extreme.   We ran with that.  There were two things she would “die on the hill for”.  They were Praise and Worship during her ceremony to the Lord they love and a flower wreath in her hair.  Gotta love it!  She and Daniel were Aggies and Daniel was going into the service.  We had limited time to find a venue and get started.  We finally found a place that the date, minister and all the other requirements would fit…The Chapel in Ana Villa.  It didn’t have everything exactly as she wanted, but with the help of Lisa Stiles of Coco Fleur Events and her beautiful floral talent, trees from Bread and Butter, lighting from Randy Ro Entertainment and vision, we were able to pull of the most amazing wedding with everything that they envisioned including the sugar flower and butterfly cake that was divine, created by The Jenny Layne Bakery..  It was SO MUCH FUN.  There friends and the groom did surprise dance for Emily, they danced the night away and left to a butterfly confetti send off.  Emily has a special place in my heart because I have known her for so long.  I know they will live happily ever after.  What a better way to start their life together…a perfect day!
